What is the Zika Nowcast? The Zika Nowcast is a daily risk alert for Zika spread in the United States. Given the well-established links between the weather and mosquito habitation, our Zika Nowcast automatically inputs forecastable environmental conditions to uniquely identify areas at risk for Aedesmosquito growth. Local Zika transmission will occur only where the conditions for Aedes growth are met, and our Zika Nowcast captures these conditions, providing daily risk outputs. How can the Zika Nowcast be used? Risk classifications of low, medium, and high, help guide the user s response. A user living in an area of high or medium risk can make an informed & timely decision to wear mosquito repellent, clear out stagnant water from the house and workplace, and wear long-sleeved clothing, etc. Users in low-risk areas can be more comfortable knowing that local transmission is less likely to occur. When news reports of an imported Zika case come to your city or town, the Nowcast can provide a framework for the user to gauge the risk of local spread and respond accordingly.
